poem 75

For the past to be the past

It must no longer last

Up through the future

into the present

It must remain as dead

As a body without its head

Cut off from life’s flow

Laid down below

In the dirt like a man

Who’s been buried

The very hands of time

Set still in the sands that bind

Neither shifting nor

Changing in the winds of

The wily wisdom come

From the sons of none

That speak the truth but

Only forsake the solid

Reality that becomes

Persons as real as

The imagination is

Alive and not regenerated

Through reincarnation

Being only one iteration

Of the soul that is life

Now, lay down the past

For less than a memory

To behold in the mind’s eye

Nothing good therein

It is gone and for good

It is gone to be sure

Lay hold not of the past

As some precious vision

Of the mind’s mesmerized

Eyeball in the memory

Which stares upon the past

Like some crystal ball

To foretell what can be forestalled

With action and more action

In the present moment

Leading the way into the future

Without a nod to former times

The memory untainted by

The past that once was

But no longer is anymore

Like that man buried deep

Within the dirt of the earth

Let lie fallow that ground

Unworked ever again by

Memory’s seeder which

Embellishes the land with

Ideas of things that never

Were but seem to have been

It is for the present moment

In which we now do live

That we must continue on

In action and still more action

Leaving the behind as far

As we can the past

Dead and denied life

In the present moment

For without movement

Into the future with action

The lethargy of the past

Will pounce upon us

Leaving us as dead

To the present as well

As the future we inhabit

We cannot live in the past

And abide in the present

Even as we cannot taste

The future by feasting

Upon the days foregone

Like some dog chewing

A bone worn to bits

All the marrow drained
